Abstract
|
This training manual serves as an ongoing resource for training
personnel in the field of environmental management of minesites.
It contains both technical information for course presenters
and resource materials suitable for further development of
training workshops based upon actual case studies. The training
materials include text material, numerous figures, maps, tables,
photographs and a suite of comprehensive overhead transparencies.
The objective of this training manual is to present within
a workshop training format the environmental ethics, principles
and strategies which are relevant today to mining operations.
It is designed to encourage mining interests in various regions
of the world to adopt strategies consistent with sustainable
development. The training manual deals with issues such as
water pollution, disposal of mine wastes, tailings management
and tailings dams, site reclamation, environmental impact
assessment (EIA) and environmental management systems and
auditing. Each issue is illustrated through a real-life case
study.
The Case Study Exercises focus on the ZCCM Nchanga
Mine, located in the Zambian Copperbelt. Additional case studies
address the following issues: acid mine drainage, mine site
environmental management in an arid environment, treatment
and monitoring of effluent from ore processing plants, cyanide
tailings management and environmental toxicity, uranium mine
waste management and wetlands environmental management.
