Abstract

This report presents the technical measures that can be taken to reduce the environmental impact of mining and processing of non-ferrous metal ores. It provides an overview of both large-scale and small-scale mining, and their potential impacts on the environment. Possible sources of contaminants are identified, as well as risks from closure of mines and abandoned sites. Control technologies and protection of the working environment are reviewed. The final sections of the guide deal with aspects of environmental planning, policy development and establishment of management and control system.

Technical annexes give further details on acid mine drainage, on airborne contaminants, the working environment and on regulatory requirements.
