Abstract
|
This publication is a joint effort by the International Council
on Metals and the Environment (ICME), and the United Nations
Environment Programme (UNEP). A 61 page compilation of 29
case studies, the publication illustrates how good environmental
performance is achieved through a combination of sound procedures
and good management, operating in a clear regulatory framework.
The case studies include examples of environmental management
systems, project approval procedures, regulatory development,
good operations and techniques, training and education. They
cover the main elements of the mining cycle, i.e. exploration,
mining, primary metals processing, recycling, rehabilitation
and closure.
Examples are all innovative approaches that can be used in
countries other than the ones illustrated. They explain what
was done, and the results achieved.
The publication provides useful information for a range of
readers in industry and government. It is especially intended
to motivate decision-makers by demonstrating what has been
achieved elsewhere. However, it is not a technical manual,
and for detailed information the reader is advised to follow
up directly with the case study authors, whose names are provided.
The contact addresses for UNEP and ICME are also included
for readers wishing further advice on the issues raised in
the document.
Key words for abstracting: exploration, mining, metallurgy,
case studies, environmental management.
