This workshop, held in Buenos Aires, Argentina,
on 5 – 6 November 1998, was organized by ICME in cooperation
with UNEP and SEGEMAR (Argentine Geological Service) to
provide increased awareness and improved understanding of
the purpose, methodologies, application and benefits of
risk assessment and contingency / emergency response planning
with respect to mine tailings, to identify any related issues
or concerns, and to define approaches that foster the effective
management of tailings impoundments. As well as experts
in the fields of dam safety, risk assessment and contingency
planning, the workshop brought together representatives
from governments and international agencies, company managers
responsible for environmental protection and the operational
aspects of risk assessment and contingency planning, and
industry executives responsible for corporate performance.

Spanish.
