Accident Prevention and Preparedness at Mine
Sites
Two years ago, in response to a number of serious accidents at
mine sites, UNEP published with the assistance of the mining industry
an international
handbook on 'APELL in Mining'.
A recent informal workshop in Geneva on 14 May 2003 reviewed again
how some leading companies, mining associations and other institutions
are dealing with the situation of potential accidents at mine sites.
The workshop brought together managers, officials and experts to
review practical examples of APELL implementation, and to define
further work that needs to be done. (link to workshop report on
http://www.uneptie.org/pc/apell/events/miningworkshop.html).
A number of examples of APELL application are included in the report,
including an explanation of the International
Cyanide Management Code.
The workshop concluded that more needs to be done to promote the
application of APELL or similar procedures in the industry, and
that teaching institutions have an important role in raising awareness
and training on this issue. The workshop also provided input to
the International
Council for Metals and Mining (ICMM) which has recently developed
an APELL work programme for its members.
