EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS IN MINING - APELL

WHAT IS APELL?

APELL LogoAwareness and Preparedness for Emergencies at Local Level (APELL) is a strategic programme that provides detailed guidelines for the development and implementation of highly effective, integrated, and well-practised emergency response plans in local communities.

APELL can be adopted to several categories of technological disasters and natural disasters and has been adapted for specific applications: APELL for Port Areas was released in 1996, and TransAPELL was published in 2000.

APELL for Mining has been developed to address the specific risks in mining industries and offers a solution for joint emergency prevention, preparedness, response planning between mining activities and related communities. This publication in a PDF format is available pdf (427 KB).

Upcoming Event: on 14 May 2003, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, UNEP and the International Council for Mining and Metals (ICMM) will host an informal workshop concerning the promotion and further development of the "APELL for Mining" program.
