The March 2002 issue of Natural Resources Forum - published on behalf of the United Nations - a special issue focusing on Mining, People and the Environment

"Development in the mining and minerals industry involves direct human intervention in natural ecosystems. In fact, the history of civilization is in some ways a record of the impact of humans on nature. However, today mining projects must go beyond providing a source of income: they also need to be sustainable in the context of their natural surroundings. Issues relating to mining as well as water, energy, forests and biodiversity all need to have an ecosystem approach superimposed on the development focus."
Editorial by Roberto C. Villas Bôas
