Working Papers
During the two years of MMSD's existence, a key feature
of our work has been to commission research around a number of themes
related to sustainable development and the mining and minerals sector.
Reports are intended to inform the work of the Project
Report and also to stand on their own as Working Papers that provide
more in-depth analysis of specific areas of interest. The following
are a few examples:
A large number of these research reports are available
from various pages of the MMSD website. For convenience, a list
of those currently available is now included in the MMSD
Working Paper website and divided under various headings.

MMSD Assurance Group
The Assurance Group currently has twenty-four members representing
diverse areas of expertise from key stakeholder groups in the mining
and minerals sector. The Assurance Group is governed by a charter

Environment Australia has very specific responsibilities
in the Uranium Mining industry under the Environment Protection
(Alligator Rivers Region) Act 1978. This Act establishes the statutory
position of the Supervising Scientist who is responsible for supervision
of uranium mining in the Alligator Rivers Region of the Northern
Territory (including Kakadu National Park) and for scientific research
into the effects of uranium mining on the environment of the region.

Best
Practice Environmental Management in Mining
A major role of government is setting environment standards
and ensuring that individuals and organisations meet them.
Increasingly, however, government, industry and community
organisations are working as partners in protecting our environment
for present and future generations. The Sustainable Industries
Branch, through the activities of a dedicated Mining Team,
encourages the Mining Sector to engage with ecoefficiency
principles, adopt best practice approaches and develop an
environmental performance culture as core business. Environment
Australia administers the Best Practice Environmental Management
in Mining Program. The Steering Committee is convened regularly
and training
kits and booklets
are available on-line. As part of its philosophy of encouraging
best practice in mining, Environment Australia supports the
principles and development of the Australian
Minerals Industry Code for Environmental Management 2000.
